How to make money with affiliate marketing

Do you want to know how to earn money with affiliate marketing? Well, you are in the perfect place. Before you can earn money with affiliate marketing it’s essential to understand how it works.

So what is affiliate marketing? It is promoting a product or service for another company. My favorite part? You do not have to create a product yourself. When you become an affiliate of a company, you get an affiliate link. So every time someone uses that link to purchase something, you earn a commission. How much you get from it depends on the company. Some give you a certain percentage, while some give you a set amount.

Choose a niche

Picking a niche is one of the crucial steps for affiliate marketing success. A niche narrows your focus to a specific area of interest, making it easier to target your audience. Here is how to choose your niche:

  • Find your passion: Choose something you’re genuinely interested in. For example, if you’re passionate about health, fitness, or traveling, you will naturally enjoy creating content around these topics.
  • Research demand: Use tools like Google Trends or others to check the search demand for your niche. It’s important to ensure that people are searching for information in your chosen area.
  • Check for profitability: Research the potential for monetization by looking at affiliate programs in your niche. Niches like technology, fashion, beauty, finance, and health often have profitable affiliate opportunities.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I'll receive a commission if you purchase through my link, at no extra cost to you.

Find the right affiliate programs

When you have chosen your niche, find affiliate programs that align with your content and audience. Here are your options:

  • Join affiliate networks: Affiliate networks like Shareasale, Amazon Associates, or ClickBank offer various products and services in different niches. Joining one of these networks allows you to access many affiliate programs in one place.
  • Direct affiliate programs: Many companies, especially those in tech or online services, offer direct affiliate programs. Examples include Bluehost, Shopify, and Canva. Always check if the brands you love offer direct programs.
  • High-paying or recurring commissions: Look for programs that either offer high one-time commissions or recurring commissions (common with software subscriptions). The good about a recurring affiliate is that every month you will earn som from it, and over time it definitely can boost your earnings.

Build a platform (Blog, YouTube, social media)

Affiliate marketing requires a platform where you can promote your links. This can be a blog, a YouTube channel, or even a social media presence:

  • Start a blog: One of the most common ways to promote affiliate links is through blogging. A platform like WordPress is a good place to start. With Bluehost as your hosting. That is what I use and recommend. There is different content you can make with a blog. From “How-to” guides, product reviews, recommended tools that your audience will find helpful, and other content.
  • Create a YouTube channel: If you prefer video content, YouTube is a powerful platform for affiliate marketing. Product reviews, tutorials, and unboxing are popular ways to include affiliate links naturally. And there are ways for you to make a YouTube channel without having to show yourself, completely faceless, if that is what you prefer.
  • Utilize social media: Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest are great for promoting affiliate links. For the best results, include links in bios, stories, or descriptions.
If you need a place to hold your links and/or products, I have the perfect place. You can easily put links there, and it’s a great place for digital products. Stanstore is a good website that is easy to set up and quick to use.

Create valuable content

Content is the key to affiliate marketing success. Your goal is to create helpful, informative, or entertaining content that leads your audience to purchase through your links:

  • Product Reviews: Write in-depth reviews of products, including pros and cons. Reviews often convert well because potential buyers want more information before making a purchase.
  • “Best Of” Lists: Create blog posts or videos that compare the best products in your niche. For example, “The Best Budget-Friendly Fitness Gear” can include affiliate links to each product.
  • How-To Guides: Educate your audience on solving specific problems using the affiliate products you recommend. For instance, if you’re in the tech niche, a guide on “How to Build a Website with WordPress” could include affiliate links to hosting services.

Drive Traffic to Your Platform

No matter how great your content is, it won’t convert without traffic. There are several ways to drive traffic to your blog, YouTube channel, or social media page:

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Optimize your content for search engines so people find your blog posts or videos when searching for specific topics. Use relevant keywords and ensure your content is helpful. A helpful tool to make SEO better and easier is RankIQ. Specially designed for bloggers.
  • Social Media Marketing: Promote your affiliate content on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Create posts, stories, and reels that engage your audience and naturally lead to your affiliate products.
  • Email Marketing: Build an email list of subscribers who are interested in your niche. You can promote affiliate links through a newsletter, offering recommendations or exclusive deals.

Disclose Affiliate Relationships

Transparency is important in affiliate marketing. Always disclose to your audience that you may earn commissions from some of the products or services you recommend. This builds trust and complies with regulations like the FTC guidelines. Simply stating something like, “This post contains affiliate links, and I may earn a commission if you purchase through these links” is sufficient.

Track Your Performance

Most affiliate programs provide tracking tools that show how your links are performing. Pay attention to which products or strategies are generating the most clicks and conversions:

  • Analyze Metrics: Look at clicks, conversion rates, and the revenue generated. This helps you understand what content is resonating with your audience and what products are worth promoting more.
  • A/B Testing: Test different approaches such as link placement, call-to-action wording, or content formats to see what drives more conversions.

Scale and Diversify

As you start earning your first commissions, you can think about scaling your efforts. You can do this by:

  • Creating More Content: Consistency is key. Create more product reviews, tutorials, or other affiliate-related content regularly to increase your chances of earning.
  • Diversifying Income Streams: Join multiple affiliate programs within your niche to diversify your income. Additionally, consider creating your digital products or courses as another revenue stream.

Stay Consistent and Patient

Affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It can take time to build an audience and see significant earnings. Be consistent with content creation, optimize your strategies over time, and you’ll gradually grow your affiliate income.

By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to establishing a profitable affiliate marketing business and earning your first commission. The key to success is providing genuine value to your audience and continually refining your approach as you learn what works best.
